“A crib-biter, sold with a warranty of soundness, is to all intents and purposes returnable..” this handsome little leather-bound book is dense with practical advice about buying horses. Much of it obtains now as then and RS Surtees’ first book has it in pitchforkfuls.
Brigadier David Edelsten’s foreword is delightful and Surtees’ careful, assiduous march through the difficulties of horse-buying make amusing reading. “These pages were written for the protection of inexperienced men”, he writes. Good for him.
