Reminiscences of the Wensleydale Hounds
Nose and music, but most of all music. Under successive Chapmans this is what the Wensleydale were bred for and they would “hunt anything from an elephant to a jack weasel, including water rats” – as Captain Chapman famously responded to Lord Bolton.
The tales are told with powerful understatement. A dastardly Keeper shoots Wensleydale Cloudy, who is running hard at the head of the pack as they cross Sir John Ramsden’s deer park – “Mr Chapman at once went and enquired why he had done this.” These iron men of the North stand chest deep in rivers to cure the onset of flu, they leave their horses and run, they meet for a fox ‘punctually at six’ having asked local labourers to light a fire near the strong holes. On one occasion hounds kill their fox after five hours hunt (completely unaided) and then snarlingly keep navvies from the kill for a full night. Hard and great and terrifying days.
