On the first Monday in November the members of the Society gather at the Carlton Club for the Annual Dinner: this year’s dinner will therefore be on the 4th November 2013.
It is a memorable occasion. Enoch Powell was famously put off his stride by his speech catching fire. In subtle light, he held it too near a candle. Since Brigadier Powell the Society has heard David Edelsten, Charles Moore, Lord Denham, Nicholas Soames and Professor Gash to name a handful, and last year we heard Lord Mancroft.
Our ongoing thanks go to Jonathan Orr Ewing, Secretary of the Carlton Club, who’s grandfather was at Sir Kenneth Pickthorn’s side when the original idea for the RS Surtees Society was born.
